Just a few more shopping days remain on the calendar before Christmas! Do you need a last minute gift for the pet lover in your life? Or, perhaps the coming holiday weeks will allow you time to curl up with the cat for some recreational reading.
The following books are my ‘pick of the literary list’ for pet people. They include a variety of reads to make you laugh, help you train your pet or to cope with the loss of a pet. Plus, two great picks for kids with important lessons about rescue dogs.
Underwater Dogs by Seth Casteel: The award-winning photographer showcases 80 of his captivating photos of dogs underwater in this book released last year. Casteel also authored a Kids Edition, a New York Times bestseller and major hit among young pet enthusiasts. Underwater Dogs is available (from $9.95) on Amazon.com, iTunes or Barnes & Noble and Underwater Dogs: Kids Edition is available for $9.94 on Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble.
Pet Parents: A Journey Through Unconditional Love and Grief by Colleen Ellis (foreword written by Dr. Marty Becker): After
losing her dog in 2004, Ellis opened the first standalone pet funeral home in the U. S. in Indianapolis. In her first book, Ellis helps pet parents, veterinarians, pet loss professionals and others celebrate the special bonds we share with our pets. Pet Parents: A Journey Through Unconditional Love and Grief is available (from $7.69) on Amazon.com.
The Perfect Dog by Roger Mugford: Widely known as Britain’s leading animal psychologist and inventor of the HALTI collar, Mugford debunks some of the common myths around dog care and teaches pet parents how to care for their pups in a practical, rewarding way in The Perfect Dog, released earlier this year. The Perfect Dog (paperback) is available for $12.25 on Amazon.com.
Looking for a great pet book for children? Here are two options, written by my fellow Women in the Pet Industry Network (WIPIN) members:
Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover by Denise Fleck: Fleck, a long-time rescuer and specialist in Pet First Aid & CPR, illustrates the
importance of treating everyone (including our four-legged friends) as equals. Told through the eyes of a young girl and her “fur-ever” friend, Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover embraces adoption and teaches kids and parents alike how to avoid unfair judging and stereotypes towards our four-legged friends. Available for $13.15 on Amazon.com.
JJ The American Street Dog and How He Came to Live in Our House by Diane Rose-Solomon: The first in a series by Rose-Solomon, a Certified Humane Education Specialist, the award-winning book teaches kids (and adults) about animal rescue, pet adoption, basic pet care and the unconditional love a pet has for its family. A percentage of book sale profits is donated to animal rescue organizations. Available for $16.99 from SOP3Publishing.
