Dig this… a portion of this post is sponsored, but opinions are my own and 110% “paw-thentic”!
When we’re out shopping, we all love to find great quality products at a steal of a price. I do a little happy dance when I see a sale sign, especially on pet products! However, it’s important that we are shopping responsibly in another way too. It’s been a goal of mine for some time now to buy from socially responsible brands as often as possible.
I’m inspired by a brand that fits this criteria that I met two years ago called Chews Happiness. The story behind Chews Happiness is what motivated me to get thinking more about the products I buy.
What Does it Mean to be a Socially Responsible Company?
To put it in simple terms, being socially responsible means to work in a way that does not damage the environment or society. Socially sustainable companies work at sustaining and improving the environment and society rather than just looking out for their personal financial gain. They put much thought into how they produce and sell their products so as to have a minimal impact on the environment and a positive impact on the social welfare of others.
They may use natural, eco-friendly, and cruelty-free materials. At the same time though, they strive to benefit society by creating products that people will love as well as accelerating economic growth.
Why it’s important to Use Natural Pet Products.
Just like products humans use, pet products can have a negative impact on the earth. In fact, many pet foods and products are not only produced in a way that is unhealthy for the earth, but they may not be the best option for the wellbeing of our pets, either.
Being in the pet industry, I’ve witnessed my share of companies who try to sell products that are irresponsibly produced. Some products on store shelves contain harmful chemicals, materials, and are produced in unethical work environments. I don’t know about you, but that isn’t the kind of product or company that I want to invest my money in.
When Shopping for Socially Responsible and Natural Pet Products Look for:
- Products that reveal where they are manufactured and by whom they are produced. This assures the products are produced in an ethical manner. Choose brands that support a fair wage for their workers.
- Brands that share what materials or ingredients they use. You want to look for eco-friendly, sustainable, and natural materials or ingredients. Not all companies that claim to be “green” are actually eco-friendly. If they don’t share details such as where their materials come from, it may be because they don’t want you to know.
- Cruelty-free! This is a particularly important detail for me. Look for brands who state they are cruelty-free and have the proof to back up their claim.
Chews Happiness Story
Chews Happiness was founded by power couple, Tavor White and Meeta Gawande. They wanted to break free from their cutthroat corporate careers and to dedicate themselves to doing good for the planet.
While on a trip to Bhutan they were inspired. The country has a commitment to Gross National Happiness. Bhutan people focus on protecting the environment, their people, and culture rather than just on making money and climbing the corporate ladder.
When they returned to the U.S., the couple was determined to remember their learned lessons, apply them in their own lives, and eventually make a bigger difference in the world. After getting married and adopting a sweet pup they got their big idea! They decided to create great products that promote happiness for people, dogs, and the planet. Chews Happiness was born.
Their “Happiness Cycle” is used to spread happiness to people, pets, workers, and even the yaks who provide down for the products. They believe that “The happiness you put into the world ripples outward, transmits happiness to others, and changes lives.”
They sell gorgeous apparel such as their Happiness Hugs ™. “Handcrafted by women artisans in Bhutan and the U.S., Happiness Hugs™ are made from 100% yak down, a renewable resource that’s soft, silky and warmer than cashmere.” c
Collars and Leashes
Chews Happiness is also launching a line of Barkarons™ or dessert macaroon treats for dogs! These are to be released sometime in the fall of 2019, but I got a sneak peek at the adorable dessert treats and I’m in love! They make the perfect gift for a pet birthday or Gotcha Day celebration.
Taking just a few moments of your time to see where your pet products come from can bring lasting benefits to you, your pets, and the earth. I feel good knowing that I’ve done my part to make this world a better place by buying from companies that are socially responsible. Wishing you a happy and educated shopping trip!
