According to veterinarians, fifty percent of dogs and cats suffer from some degree of fear, anxiety, and stress as a result of triggers like thunderstorms, noisy fireworks, and being separated from their owners. And that makes this time of year especially difficult for our pets and for us!
But there are things you can do and products you can use to help comfort your pet during episodes of mild stress and anxiety. Also, be sure to speak to your vet about additional treatment options because if left untreated, fear, anxiety, and stress only progress and become worse with age.
Actions You Can Take to Ease Pet Stress
Plan activity early in the day.
Exercise is a proven stress reliever for both humans and pets. In addition, a tired pet is more likely to sleep through the muffled sounds of fireworks or a thunderstorm. Take an extra long walk or throw the ball for your dog, or pull a toy around the house for your kitty.
Leave him at home.
Although it might be tempting to take your dog along to a summer social gathering or a fireworks display, you’ll be doing both of you a favor by leaving him at home where he feels safe. Confine him to your house instead of your yard while you’re away, since access to the outdoors increases the chances of your dog escaping and becoming lost.
Create a “safe zone.”
Where does your pet feel most comfortable in your home? Make that his safe place by furnishing it with comfortable beds and blankets, as well as favorite toys and plenty of fresh water. Play soothing music or turn on the TV to help drown out any scary noises.
Understand signs of stress.
Dogs are usually good about conveying anxiety through body language. Keep an eye out for panting, pacing, drooling or shaking. Cats tend to be more subtle, showing their stress through hiding, refusing to eat, or urinating outside the litter box. If your pet appears stressed, take proactive steps right away to calm them.

Originally created to contain dog hair and dander, the Shed Defender’s inventor quickly discovered that it served other purposes, too! In addition to calming anxious dogs, the Shed Defender is great for covering hot spots, reduces contact with environmental allergens that trigger skin conditions, and is a great substitute for the dreaded “Cone of Shame.”
The Shed Defender is made from a premium, lightweight and breathable, four-way stretch fabric. It’s cool, comfortable, and easy to put on and take off.

For dogs and cats with fear, anxiety, and stress, it’s important to have access to a cozy area like a crate or small room where they can feel safe and secure. By adding a Katherine Elizabeth Pet Bed, your pet will be cradled in comfort, allowing him to relax and drift off to sleep.
Each bed features a human-quality visco-elastic memory foam that helps to relieve pressure points by reacting to body temperature and weight. The unique, patented removable bolster is ergonomically designed to support proper neck and back alignment. Created by an interior designer, the bed is not only beautiful, it’s easy to clean and the cases are machine washable.
