I’ll never forget Chilly’s adoption day. We went to the animal shelter looking for a cat, and we came home with an adorable, eight-week-old Labrador-something mix. We were planning to adopt a dog, AFTER a cat, but as life would have it, it happened the opposite way.

The American Humane Association celebrates each October as “Adopt-a-Dog” month. With millions of wonderful pups patiently waiting in shelters, this event raises much-needed awareness and helps encourage adoptions. So if you’ve been thinking about bringing home a new canine companion, there’s never been a better time.

In celebration of “Adopt-a-Dog” month, I’m sharing some heartwarming pictures of the dogs you’ve adopted and come to love. These are some of the hundreds of photos shared by my awesome followers, in celebration of their adopted dogs.

Adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue not only saves a life, but provides the adopter with countless benefits as well. Companionship, improved physical and emotional health, social interaction and devoted love are just a few of the plus-sized perks of having a dog.

If you’re ready to take the plunge, I’ve outlined five ways to go about searching for and adopting your perfect pooch. You’ll find it on the Bissell Pet Community blog.

Can’t adopt right now? You can still help! When you purchase BISSELL pet products, the company donates a portion of the proceeds to the BISSELL Pet Foundation. And in celebration of “Adopt-a-Dog” month, BISSELL will double donations for the entire month of October!

The BISSELL Pet Foundation’s mission (a charitable 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) is to help reduce the number of animals in shelters and to support organizations dedicated to the humane care and treatment of animals through pet adoption, spay/neuter programs, microchipping and foster care. Petfully,
