Can you believe it’s August already? Before you know it, the temps will be turning cooler and we’ll be inundated with pumpkin spice everything! So get outside and have fun with your best furry friend while you still can.
Trying to come up with a fun end-of-the-summer activity for you and your dog? Try these on for size:
What could be better than getting away from it all with your pooch? For dedicated one-on-one time, camping is hard to beat. Whether you pitch a tent in the national forest or pull your RV into a developed campground, there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures. Don’t forget to investigate the pet rules and regulations for the area where you’ll be camping to make sure it’s dog friendly.
If you have a dog who loves to make a splash, look into dog friendly water sports like paddle boarding, boating, and kayaking. As with any new activity, introduce him slowly to ensure that he has a positive experience. If you check around, you may even be able to find dog-human water sports classes in your area. Be sure to take safety precautions like outfitting your dog with a life jacket, especially if he’s not a strong swimmer and/or you’re going to be far from shore.
Why not taking hiking and exploring with your dog to a whole new level with geocaching? This popular activity, which involves using GPS coordinates to search for a hidden cache, offers different levels of difficulty, making it appropriate for people and dogs of almost all shapes, sizes, and ages. Take along plenty of water and always watch your dog for signs of overheating. (For more information, check out Geocaching.com.)
No matter what sunny summer activity you choose, keep things safe and fun by preparing for potential hazards like extreme temperatures, disease-carrying insects, and seasonal anxiety triggers such as storms and fireworks.
Luckily, some great new pet safety products were recently introduced at SuperZoo, one of the largest and most exciting pet industry trade shows in the country. I brought back some of my faves to share!
Online retailer PetEdge has pet parents and their pooches covered with these three great summertime tools.
- Cool Pup products were designed to keep pets cool and hydrated on sweltering summer days. That’s especially important since dogs can easily become critically ill and even die after being exposed to hot temps on walks or even in your yard. In addition to using products like Cool Pup, keep pets indoors on hot days, walk them early in the day or late at night, and NEVER leave them in a hot car!
- Insect Shield for Pets helps protect your pet from mosquitoes and ticks that can carry Lyme disease, heartworm, and other dangerous insect-borne illnesses! By binding safe, long lasting insect repellent to garments, blankets, bandanas, and blankets, Insect Shield keeps pesky critters at bay!
- The KONG Anxiety-Reducing Shirt can help soothe animals who suffer from anxiety brought on by loud noises, travel, or separation from their moms and dads. These shirts feature a patented snug-fitting, wrap-around design that applies gentle compression to pressure points all over the body and provides a soothing, swaddling effect. Additionally, each shirt includes a lavender sachet for added calming benefits.

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, emergencies happen. During the summer, veterinarians and animal ER clinics commonly see a variety of seasonal accidents and emergencies. Not only do these cause discomfort and worry for both pets and humans, the unexpected expense can create stress on the family budget.
According to Petplan pet insurance, the average claims paid to policyholders for summer vet emergencies in 2016 were as follows:
- Heat exhaustion: $2615
- Burns to paw pads from hot pavement: $1027
- Anxiety conditions: $395
Luckily, with an insurance policy from Petplan, you can protect your pocketbook and provide top notch veterinary care for your pet year-round for as little as $1-$2 dollars a day

As tempting as it can be to toss your dog a bone from the barbeque – DON’T! They can splinter, break, or create blockage in your dog’s intestine. Instead, give them a safe, tasty treat they’ll love.
Buffalo Range All Natural Buffalo Rawhide treat is a whole new kind of rawhide chew. Unlike other popular chews, which are often made with artificial ingredients, red dyes, fillers, and preservatives, Buffalo Range is made with only four simple, all-natural, delicious ingredients.
Real buffalo jerky is woven in with the buffalo rawhide for a treat that’s gentle and fully digestible. Plus, the use of real jerky keeps them interested longer than a typical rawhide, while the natural buffalo rawhide makes it long lasting.
